"A new survey finds the percentage of Canadians turning to food banks is rising sharply.
Food Banks Canada says there has been an increase of around 20 per cent each month among those using food banks.
The increase is based on survey results of food bank usage this past March compared to March 2008.
Food Banks Canada executive director Katharine Schmidt says they believe increase in demand is due to the current economic climate.
Schmidt says the problem of hunger in Canada was already persistent and unacceptable, and in the last year it has increased significantly.
A report by Food Banks Canada says food bank use has remained above 700,000 people a month since 1997."
